Catalyst Game Labs has been letting us know for a bit about previews that will be releasing for their upcoming Shadowrun 5th Edition ruleset. We’ve already seen one preview that focused on the look and feel of the game, and now we’ve something new to check out. This second preview, which is available through Battleshop and DriveThruRPG, puts more attention on the framework of the game, including attributes, limits, uses of Edge, and much more.
The second preview explores what Shadowrun is, what it means to be a runner, and how Shadowruns work. It takes a closer look at how dice are used in the game, and it explains how to calculate success. These are all basic principles of Shadowrun, and the preview has everything laid out in a nice streamlined fashion.
Tests are looked at in detail, which are essentially the DCs of the Shadowrun universe. From what I can see, everything plays out mostly the same. Perhaps the most important part of the preview is the character creation section. Throughout the whole of Shadowrun what I love the best is how amazing your character can be. The dystopian approach to cybernetics, enhancements, and technology as a whole really make for some interesting things when you toss in a fantasy aesthetic. This preview touches on how characters work, and what a player needs to do to create a character they’ll love.
Head on over to one of the sites mentioned above and pick you the second preview for Shadowrun 5th Edition. It’s set to release this summer, and maybe we’ll see something about it at Gen Con hopefully. Catalyst is working hard to help revive the Shadowrun world, and they’re right on their way to doing so.
